The Trump phenomenon's most revealing and defining occasions – not its most significant, nor most harsh, nor most hazardous, nor stupidest, but perhaps its most illuminating – came earlier this autumn. Over the span of several weeks, the American president started showing all observers his plans for an ornate dance hall double the dimensions compared to the White House and then commenced solo dismantling the East Wing portion to construct it.
He has committed acts countless times more severe – the present calculation of deaths due to his slashing to foreign assistance stands at 600,000 and rising, and recently a study forecast his petroleum strategies would result in fatalities 1.3 million more. However nothing as distinctive. No other president would have risked – genuinely, no previous leader would have conceived – solo demolishing significant portions of the executive mansion to construct a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the direct cooperation of some of America's wealthiest, almost all of whom have business with federal agencies.
We transitioned from 'the gentle will obtain the world' toward 'the humble will perish to cholera'
As disorienting as it is to observe the leader try to upend the established notion regarding democracy and replace it with its direct contrary, there exists a significant segment within America who should not find it completely novel. That encompasses people such as ourselves – among senior generations a near majority – who were educated within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have observed across decades as politically conservative religious groups transformed the Christ we were raised with into the total contrary of our perception of his character. Essentially, they turned a figure of compassion into a figure of hate who blesses exactly the harshness that he denounced in the Gospel; this transformation occurred at a slower pace, through multiple decades rather than months, however it is still disturbing in the same ways, a confusing personal impact for countless people.
A Harmful Christianity Establishes Itself
So let me first describe the Jesus that I grew up with, because theoretically Christ is the focus within Christian belief, and given that the rapidly expanding group within America could have minimal awareness regarding him as they consider themselves atheists or doubters or nones. I have no problem with these different approaches, nor with any other faith; yet I maintain that contain precious wisdom of substantial value in the Christian story.
It is decidedly not the story of an authoritative monarch emerging; conversely, an infant arrives to displaced parents in an automotive shelter, who need to rapidly escape to a foreign land to escape undercover officers. The child matures in modest conditions, a laboring woodworker; his teaching focuses on affection for fellow humans, particularly for the impoverished – and not a sentimental love, but a concrete one, expressed by feeding and sheltering. The Savior's reaction to violence is to present the other cheek – not as a gesture of compliant endurance, but as a way to instruct the aggressor; his approach to wrongdoing indicates that whenever an individual takes your coat you should give him your sweater as well.
The obvious and straightforward fact that the Savior of the gospels calls for a form of profound affection centered on the poor has consistently rendered Christianity somewhat of a provocative belief system: attractive to the masses, but due to its intrinsic extremism requiring to be controlled. In the fifties it was controlled by dilution – Protestant Christianity was so dominant that it basically sanctified existing conditions.
A Struggle for the Finest Within Us
So I have been encouraged to see the steadfast resistance to Trump arise during the previous year. It has served as great solace to participate in developing the movement that has protested openly through repeated demonstrations, and seems to have inspired voters to show up in large quantities in the off-year elections. We will need to persist with it, and with identical determination, with American flags at every demonstration and requests to the finest aspects of American history.
We will be questioned ... how did you receive the stranger? Did you welcome them and receive them or reject?
The nation is most protected, in other words, by reference to the highest about American history, just as Christianity is optimally secured by relationship to that which renders it special and wonderful, which is the example of Jesus. In both situations does it suggest pretending the most negative of both America and Christian faith was nonexistent; it signifies both modesty and faith, a blend that serious national faithful should be comfortable with.
