The buzz around the recent awards show was significant, especially after presenter Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic image of a desert monolith. The secret is finally answered. Larian Studios is developing a completely new Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a audacious trailer that included intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the very opening of infernal gates.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. The studio stated ahead of time that a direct sequel to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.
However, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This phrasing suggests that the team could be building a real-time experience rather than another tactical title. For now, this is speculation, as only a announcement clip is available.
What Makes Divinity Special
The Divinity series is universally respected and many say it sparked the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are known for intricate stories, branching plots, and flexible progression—traits that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is classic fantasy, what truly sets Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.
In contrast to modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs only possible with a distinct build with a personal story.
The series is also notoriously permissive, enabling players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Most missions can be solved in a variety of manners, sometimes in unexpected fashion.
- You might find an answer because you remembered something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a unorthodox way.
The Journey Continues
It is precisely these elements that have cemented the series to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, fans can get ready for a new entry in this esteemed franchise.
