Nepal's Political Landscape Witnesses Significant Alliance Forged By TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's national polls, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the wake of widespread and fatal youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which led to significant loss of life.

"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.

The September uprising was sparked by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Terms of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the formal pact, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the country's older political class. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.

Broader Political Consultations Taking Place

In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of major political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and open environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
