Fed Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year During Financial Instability

The US monetary authority cut borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year during economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release reads. “Price increases has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically studies labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, such as the count of employment gains created to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of positions created to the economy in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Decline

Though the bureau was set to publish September’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the closure started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell said recently, a trend he had earlier attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are going up, although slowly. Prices rose three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
