RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just above the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a series of entry passages leading to the depot... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the operation conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced extremist governance over parts of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the minister stated.

RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State after its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of our armed forces involved in this strike for their professionalism and their valour," the Defence Secretary said. "They were among numerous British troops on duty over the holidays. This action, to remove terrorist threats who pose a risk to our security, shows how our armed forces are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK within its borders and strong abroad."

During December, the American forces conducted what it termed a "large-scale strike" against Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an assault claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says IS still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in both countries.
